I am sure someone has already figured it out, but recently it dawned on me why swearing (and its inappropriateness in polite company) is universal: it has to do with control.
Having control over your emotions/behaviours is a desirable trait (and vice versa, not having control is undesirable), as it allows for improved (more rational) decision making, leading to a more successful life. Refraining from swearing demonstrates this desired ability.
This is why people generally don’t cuss in front of people they want to impress. When parents insist on their kids not swearing at all, they are just trying to make their offsprings *appear* to have full control.
